New Year Res(v)olutions – 2018


Our first project, the anthology, is taking shape and is finally looking like an actual manuscript (!) and that, folks, means that our Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign as well as our launch event are just around the corner – more on this here.

Meanwhile, in January, whilst everyone is recuperating from the festive period, we will be preparing for our February launch [cue] keep an eye out for sneaky cover previews, WIP’s and behind the scene shots of our preparations.

IN 2017 WE:

  • launched Knight Errant Press in March
  • by August we gathered 3/4 of our first anthology 
  • later that month we launched our creative writing workshop seriesThey Come from Within
  • to date we’ve done 6 workshops in Edinburgh, Falkirk and Glasgow and they’ve all been well-attended and received positive feedback, with a few regulars returning for word-brewing bonanza led by us and our creative pals!
  • and are officially being registered (80% through, the paperwork is done, we’re waiting on the approval of Companies House) as a Community Interest Company. What’s that? Well, it really is quite straightforward:

    A community interest company is a business with primarily social objectives whose surpluses are principally reinvested for that purpose in the business or in the community, rather than being driven by the need to maximise profit for shareholders and owners. – trusty Wikipedia

  • making solid steps towards realising our first project


2018 is shaping up to be busy. F, M or Other – Volume I will be launched in early February, followed by a release in March upon the successful completion of our crowdfunding campaign; Volume II us currently scheduled for June-July.

We’ve been quietly working away at a few smaller projects and with a couple fantastic submissions received last year, we hope to publish some of them this year. For now, until the time is right and so as not to jinx things, we will keep the details under wraps. Stay tuned, we will keep you in the loop throughout the year.

We are not planning a large project akin to F, M or Other in 2018 but are open for submissions: short story, flash fiction, novellas, novels, poetry, graphic narratives, speculative fiction and YA!

In 2018 we’re going to really weigh in with our social objectives – collaborating with charitable and creative organisations for more and better LGBTQIA+, migrant, BAME and translation representation, storytelling and learning opportunities.

They Come from Within: the creative writing workshops will continue, with more one off events like the SF/F workshop with Eris Young. In August, we will start putting together what we hope will become an annual publication of writing inspired by the workshops. Another ambitious plan of ours is to expand our sessions to Dundee – if you know anyone who might be interested in taking up the reigns for us there, feel free to drop us a line.

2018 has a lot in store for us and we hope to be able to attend some of the bookish events across the UK and Scotland in full capacity as a publisher – more on this as we carry on. In addition to the above, we will be applying for funding opportunities in order to expand our possibilities.


  1. Successfully fund and publish both volumes of the F, M or Other anthology.
  2. Push our social objectives to the forefront: more LGBTQIA+, BAME, migrant and translated voices.
  3. Continue at a steady pace with They Come from Within – with more tailored workshops and hopefully a few guest led workshops.
  4. Expand TCFW to Dundee.
  5. Release some of the smaller projects into the wild early on in the year and work on the bigger ones to be ready for release in the second half of the year.
  6. Apply for funding opportunities to expand our possibilities.


We have had a lot of support this year. Seriously, thank you folks. The kind words, the follows and retweets, for attending our workshops and spreading the good ol’ word-of-mouth, but especially for having faith in us and our project. We really appreciate it.

We’ve been to a few bookish events (in Scotland) this year – the Zine Library opening in Edinburgh’s Central Library, Glasgow Comicon, SYP Scotland’s annual conference, Edinburgh Comic Art Festival – and met a lot of great, talented people who inspired us to work even harder towards our goals.

Over the summer, our core team was approached and joined by Lenka, Tanisha and Kanika – for a short and sweet summer they became our trusty interns. They’ve helped us a lot – they proofread and gave feedback on accepted submissions; researched crowdfunding and compiled a marketing strategy for Kickstarter and helped set up and launch our creative workshops. You are our heroes, thank you.

In 2018 we will be a smaller team, consisting of Nathaniel (a resourceful human, jack of all trades and Responsible Adult), Rhiannon (editor, production wizard and the Voice of Reason) and Lenka (the soothing camomile tea of our team, social media child and marketing assistant) and, of course, our most valued team member (it’s hard work being photogenic, regal and getting enough sleep) – Kuzya the Expert Office Dog.

Here is to a fair and exciting year ahead – onwards and upwards! 




The Bisexual Awareness Week might have passed with September wrapping up – but that doesn’t mean that the issue of bi-erasure and being vocal about it should be left alone until next year’s awareness week. 

Bisexuality Awareness day falls on the 23rd of September of every year and has a website dedicated to it. On Twitter the hashtags #BiVisibilityDay and #BiVisibilityWeek are full of people encouraging and supporting each other. But we understand that this might not be enough to make you feel accepted and validated considering how pervasive bisexual erasure is in popular media and in everyday life.

Phrases such as ‘it’s just a phase’ abound when the question of bisexual individuals is raised, often leading to the suggestion that bi-identifying persons are actually straight or actually gay. ‘But you only date *insert the opposite gender*!’ is another common expression, suggesting that bisexuality means that the person has to have an equal number of partners of ‘both genders’ during their dating life. Thankfully, your identity is not a recipe that requires specific measurements of encounters with different genitalia to be valid. No matter what some people might say about bisexuals (they’re ‘greedy,’ ‘indecisive’ or ‘confused’) this is not the case. Your identity is valid, you exist and you matter, even if some might make you feel otherwise.

With issues like pervasive bi-erasure and biphobia, the issue of proper representation in media is often brought up. Poor representation of marginalised groups is a heated topic and extends to the portrayal of bisexual people, or the lack thereof. There is some solace to be found in having a character whom you can relate to, someone, although fictional, who provides proof that your feelings are real and you are not making up your own sexuality. This is especially important at a young age when teenagers are developing their own sense of self. While the number of YA novels that feature bisexual characters in the anglophone publishing industry has increased, there is still a lot of stigma that writers portraying bisexual characters have to deal with.

Casey Lawrence (@MyExplodingPen), author of The Survivor’s Club series, discussed issues such as being accused of writing characters that are ‘not bi enough’ because they end up with a partner of the opposite gender. However, if Lawrence were to write them with a same-sex partner then there would be those claiming that the character is simply gay, thus erasing their bisexual identity. These issues go to show that societal prejudices seep beyond day-to-day life and affect creative portrayals of fictional people’s lives. This makes it hard to find works that do not devalue one’s identity at the expense of someone else’s.

That’s why we’d like to give you some author and book recommendations featuring bisexual characters.

The Gay ‘Sellouts’

The famous Princess Bride quote “Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something” fits quite well into our current social climate where commercials and ads jump out at us from every corner. Companies have to scramble to stay relevant and they are trying to reach new audiences by being ‘current’ and, as we all know well enough, it doesn’t always work out (Pepsi, I’m talking about Pepsi).

So, if we have these massive corporations reaching out to different markets, inevitably, LGBTQIA+ people end up becoming a part of that conversation. The famously dubbed ‘pink pound’[1] is becoming more and more desirable. According to Crunch, its estimated worth is £6 billion per year, and while the term still is often linked with gay men, it is being increasingly used to describe the purchasing power of the LGBTQIA+ community in general.

As June was Pride Month, many companies came forward with different campaigns that celebrated pride. Nike did an ad for its #BeTrue pride collection featuring the legendary performer and vogue artist Leiomy Maldonado. After years of ads featuring different athletes, Nike recognised voguing as a legitimate sport that deserves praise for its intricacy and the amount of hard work that goes into it. Nike’s act of featuring a transgender woman performing something which has so much of its history linked to the LGBTQIA+ movement is one of the few instances of mainstream sport brands shining a spotlight on queer issues. This has led to people discussing the intentions behind a big brand’s choice to play on themes connected with the queer community in order to appeal to a wider audience. For example, David Levitz and Ash Hardell talked about “pinkwashing”[2] and the commercialisation of the LGBTQIA+ movement in a recent video together, saying that brands like Skittles and Target producing this kind of merchandise makes them wonder if these companies have ulterior motives.

Pride Marches are also being accused of becoming too commercial. There are a number of activists who have expressed the opinion that Pride marches are becoming increasingly commercial and are watering down their original political message. Some have criticised Pride Marches by saying that Pride is now just an excuse to party, that people have “lost sight of its identity — and of the many challenges that the gay community has still to overcome. The outside influence of brands is ‘classic pinkwashing’”.

While the amount of people attending the march in New York City has grown by a third, a survey showed that more than a quarter of the attendants in 2014 identified as straight. These numbers could suggest a deviation from the original aim of Pride, which is to create awareness of the social and political issues concerning queer lives. That is not to say that it has become just a party for straight people; there are many straight allies who want to show their support. However, this could mean that Pride is now more focused on catering to the ‘general’ public. Last summer, a group bore a black coffin on their shoulders along the parade route at London Pride, symbolising what they, and others, perceive to be the death of the movement. In addition, smaller Pride celebrations are closing down because of a lack of funds and sponsors.

Two opposing camps become visible in this debate. There are those who are not pleased with the influence that big sponsors have on Pride marches. Then there is the opposing side that argues that sponsors are needed in order to make the events as accessible as possible and help raise public awareness. This was the case for Leicester Pride – the organisers had to set up a donations page because they struggled to find sponsors, without financial support the event simply could not happen.

The real question is this: Are the giant, faceless corporations that do not care about helping anyone but their wallets just trying to profit off of yet another marketing strategy? Can something good come out of this?

Amrou Al-Kadhi, a drag queen performer, talks about general, mainstream venues demanding that queer performers should just be grateful for being given the chance to perform for free. They feel as if they are just tokens for cis, straight people to come and see something unusual and for the venues to bring in the ‘pink pound’. If voices of people like Al-Kadhi are not taken seriously and they themselves are considered just an obscure attraction, then queer people have the right to be sceptical about anyone wanting to make a profit selling products connected to queer culture. This is not to say that everything is just about the ‘evil corporation’ wanting to make money, but there is always the danger that the message will be watered down in order to appeal to a larger audience. Shannon Keating brings up the history behind “The Future is Female” slogan t-shirt and points out how a product whose proceeds were donated to a charity supporting the cause got taken over by bigger clothing companies that do not share their profits with any of the charities that the t-shirt was originally made for.

This debate reveals that providing a platform where marginalised voices can share their stories, and have others understand their struggles, is vital and needs to be focused on. While the mainstream is starting to recognise more queer performers and creators, it is important that it is not done in the spirit of ‘tokenism’ but as a gateway to understanding and acceptance.

This is also, firmly, an issue for the publishing industry to consider. There is a lack of diversity in the industry and a need for representation, a need that commercial publishing cannot fulfil in its current state.

When LGBTQIA+ focused venues close down, like the legendary LGBTQIA+ bookstore, Giovanni’s Room, that closed in 2014, it is often a large blow to the community. Places aimed and created specifically for queer people should be uplifted and supported – giving a platform to those avoided by the mainstream is crucial to creating a change. While Nike’s decision to feature a trans woman in their ad is a significant move forward, more energy needs to be put into places that are specifically created by and for queer people. These places need to be supported not for how much they can entertain the mainstream, but because they’re one of the main reasons for the continued survival of the queer community.
